Soft Tissue & Myofascial Pain

That deep, achy, hard-to-pinpoint muscle pain that stretching never fully fixes that's often a myofascial restriction. Adhesions in the fascia and chronic muscle tension patterns need hands-on soft tissue work to resolve. Stretching alone won't get there.

Understanding the Condition

What's actually happening in the tissue.

Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds every muscle, organ, nerve, and bone in your body. When it becomes restricted from injury, overuse, poor posture, or chronic tension, it creates adhesions that limit movement, alter mechanics, and generate pain that can be felt far from the actual restriction site.

Myofascial trigger points (the "knots" you feel in a tense muscle) are localized areas of hyperirritability that refer pain to distant locations. A trigger point in the suboccipital muscles can cause headaches. A trigger point in the piriformis can mimic sciatica. Identifying and releasing the actual source not just chasing the pain location is the key.

Type

Myofascial trigger points

Localized tender points in a taut muscle band that reproduce your symptoms when pressed. Classic "knots." Often refer pain to areas that seem unrelated to the trigger point location.

Type

Fascial restrictions

Loss of normal glide between fascial layers that limits range of motion and creates a diffuse, deep aching quality that's hard to localize. Doesn't respond well to stretching alone.

Type

Scar tissue & adhesions

Dense, disorganized connective tissue from old injuries, surgeries, or chronic overuse that creates mechanical restriction and can alter nerve and blood vessel pathways through a region.

Common Symptoms
Deep, achy muscle pain that's hard to pinpoint
Tender "knots" that reproduce pain when pressed
Referred pain — hurts somewhere other than where you press
Stiffness that doesn't improve with stretching
Restricted range of motion without joint-level restriction
Muscle fatigue or weakness disproportionate to effort
Pain that's worse after prolonged postures or repetitive activity
Sensitivity to pressure along muscle bellies or at attachments
Chronic tension that returns quickly after massage
How We Treat It

The ADAPT soft tissue toolkit

Soft tissue work is where ADAPT genuinely specializes. ART® certification means Dr. Austin is trained in one of the most effective hands-on approaches to fascial and soft tissue dysfunction available — combined with cupping, IASTM, and corrective exercise to address the movement patterns that keep the tension coming back.

Active Release Technique (ART®) — precise, motion-assisted soft tissue release
Cupping — negative pressure to increase circulation and separate fascial layers
IASTM — instrument-assisted mobilization of dense scar tissue and adhesions
Dry needling (coming soon) — trigger point release for deep myofascial dysfunction
Corrective exercise to address the posture and movement patterns driving tension
Primary tool

ART®

Motion-specific tension applied as the tissue moves through its range — breaks adhesions and restores normal glide between tissue layers.

Supporting tool

Cupping

Negative pressure lifts fascial layers apart, increases local blood flow, and accelerates tissue remodeling in chronic restrictions.

Supporting tool

IASTM

Stainless steel instruments detect and mobilize dense scar tissue and fibrotic adhesions that hands alone can't fully address.

Coming soon

Dry Needling

Monofilament needles release deep trigger points that are difficult to access with surface manual therapy alone.

Your Treatment Plan
1

Tissue quality assessment

Palpation and movement testing to map where restrictions are, what's referring where, and which tissues are most involved.

2

Direct soft tissue work

ART®, cupping, or IASTM targeted at the specific restriction — not just the area that hurts.

3

Movement integration

Re-training the nervous system to use the newly freed tissue through corrective movement patterns.

4

Postural & load correction

Addressing the positions and patterns that keep driving the tissue back into restriction between sessions.

That tension that never fully goes away? Let's actually fix it.

Book your soft tissue assessment in Coeur d'Alene. We'll find where the restriction is, treat it directly, and give you tools to keep it from coming back.
