Poor posture isn't a character flaw it's a physical consequence of how your body adapts to repetitive demands. But left unaddressed, those adaptations create pain, restrict movement, and accelerate wear on joints and discs. The good news: the body responds well to correction when you give it the right inputs.

Posture is rarely something people consciously choose it's the body's best adaptation to the demands placed on it repeatedly over time. Hours at a desk, repetitive sport movements, old injuries that were never fully rehabbed, muscle imbalances from training these all shape the resting position your body settles into.
The problem isn't the posture itself. It's the downstream consequences restricted joint motion, chronically shortened or lengthened muscles, nerves under tension, and discs loaded asymmetrically over years. Addressing postural imbalance means removing the joint restrictions that lock the pattern in, releasing the soft tissue that holds it there, and then building the strength and motor patterns to actually sustain a different position.
Forward head posture
Each inch forward the head moves adds roughly 10 lbs of effective load on the cervical spine. Drives neck pain, headaches, upper trap tension, and TMD.
Upper crossed syndrome
Tight chest and weak deep neck flexors classic desk worker pattern. Creates shoulder impingement, rounded shoulders, and chronic upper back ache.
Lower crossed syndrome
Tight hip flexors and weak glutes. Anterior pelvic tilt, low back pain, and reduced hip mobility. Extremely common in both desk workers and runners.
Lateral imbalance
Left-right asymmetry in hip height, shoulder level, or spinal curvature. Creates uneven load distribution and predictable injury patterns on the loaded side.
The head weight principle
The average adult head weighs 10–12 lbs in a neutral position. For every inch it drifts forward, the effective load on the cervical spine increases by approximately 10 lbs. At 3 inches forward — common in heavy screen users — that's 40+ lbs of chronic load on the neck and upper back. This is why postural correction produces such dramatic relief in patients with chronic cervical pain and headaches.
The ADAPT approach to postural correction
Posture correction requires three things working together: joint mobility restoration so the body can get into a better position, soft tissue release so the muscles can sustain it, and corrective exercise to build the strength patterns that make the new position automatic. Without all three, changes don't hold.
